of the superior sort of this shire, moued out of enuie, affection, or ignorant tradition that, the howse of Molland is the eldest, & next heire Male to the Earledome of Deuonshire, is onely imaginatiue, & founded upon bare credulitie, without any warrant or colour of authoritie or p[roo]fe. For besides the finding of the Jury after the death of the com[m]on ancestor & father of both these families, Sir Philip Courtenay that dyed 3 E. 4, where its found as before appeareth, that William Courtenay (auncestor of Powderham howse) is his sonne & heire & soe not Phillipp Courtenay of Molland his second sonne, which is a proofe instar omnium, & undeniable in this poynt, which Phillipp had he binne eldest & heire he should not haue had soe pettie a portion as Molland & little more, but must of necessitie haue had by right
